This next song is by Kings of Leon. They are such a good band but I can’t stand the lead singer’s voice, he completely irritates me. This is such a wonderful song though. My Hubby and his back then band made such a nice cover to it, he gave an unbelievable guitar performance all of them were amazing. Their singer had a much better voice. Speaking of fire again, I’ll tell you the story of how my parents find out about my smoking habits. When I was 16 one of the teachers caught me and another friend smoking in my high school’s girl’s toilet. I have no idea what we were thinking of hiding the smoke in the toilet, you could smell it from miles but back then there were guards everywhere in my school and you couldn’t hide anything anymore. It was quite a strict environment, I’ve felt like I was in prison, no wonder I wanted to rebel. Anyway, the school principal invited my parents for a chat, my Dad showed up. I didn’t tell him the reason they wanted him there, I was too scared. When he walked into the principle office, the principle dramatically told him “sir we caught your daughter smoking in the girl’s toilet” my Dad’s reaction was “weed?” the principal answered “no sir, cigarettes” my Dad said “you called me all the way here for cigarettes?” I was in the room and I couldn’t stop laughing, my Dad was on my side. Of course he was very cross with me finding out about my smoking but he didn’t think the school principle should involve him in this shit. After this incident I got expelled for 3 days which was kind of cool because I spent some nice time at home. As for my parents, my mum couldn’t believe that I was smoking, she was in a quite shock. First I lied and said that I was helping a friend in crises and there was nowhere to talk so we went into the toilets. She believed me. At some point I’ve told her the truth. My father said “I don’t care what you do to your body but make sure that neighbors won’t see you” since then he started buying me cigarettes and I’ve smoked in my room. He was so cool about it but what can a parent do when his child rebelling like that. I think my parents approach for my naughty behavior is the right way to go because they let me experience things in my own way and by not prohibiting me of doing things, I’ve learned what’s good and what’s wrong. I think I’ve ended up on the right path after all. Check this smoky song…
What’s this song about? In an interview with Robbie, Marieke and the Doctor on Australian radio station Triple J, Nathan explained that the band never intended the song to be named "Sex on Fire". "They were totally different lyrics. Depending on whether a song starts with a melody or starts with lyrics, you know if it starts with a melody you just keep playing the melody over and over until you get it down and just throw in any lyrics that fit the verbal flow. It was actually going to be "Set Us on Fire", but one of the sound mixers in the studio walked in as we were playing and said, "Sex on Fire", huh?" And it just kind of became a running joke, and we stuck with it.".(Wikipedia – Sex on fire)
This song is by Keane. It is such a magical song, I love it and I never get tired of it. I know it’s quite mushy but it’s worth listening to. For me this song is about the special experiences that I share with my Hubby. My favourite thing is when my Hubby and I make music together; He plays the guitar or composes music on his computer. Sometimes I sing and he plays along, sometimes we even record it and it is such a fun process. A few times we’ve played the guitar together, he taught me how to play the rhythm and then he joined in with a solo part. We do get moments of perfect harmony until I ruin it with my luck of concentration issues! It is so magical sharing this passion for music together. It definitely feels like “somewhere only we know…” check out this wonderful song…
What’s this song about? Richard Hughes, Keane's drummer, offered the following explanation of the song on Chris Flynn's fansite: We've been asked whether "Somewhere Only We Know" is about a specific place, and Tim has been saying that, for him, or us as individuals, it might be about a geographical space, or a feeling; it can mean something individual to each person, and they can interpret it to a memory of theirs... It's perhaps more of a theme rather than a specific message... Feelings that may be universal, without necessarily being totally specific to us, or a place, or a time… (Wikipedia – Somewhere only we know)
This song is by Babes in Toyland. They have such a cool band name. This song brings back all the memories of the alternative rock clubs that I used to go to , they used to play Babes In Toyland all the time. I had a friend that was a huge fan as well. It’s cool to see girls make alternative rock music, I’m very jealous!
When I was about 15, I used to go out to a club that was in my Hubby’s town. His town was 20 min drive from where I lived. My Hubby used to go out to the same club. I didn’t know my Hubby back then but we were both hanging around in the same clubs. The boys will always get into fights and one night as I was sitting next to a table there was a guy thrown by another guy and landed on my table. I remembered it because this fight was quite brutal and I was quite scared for my own life. Years later I’ve discovered that the guy that landed on my table was my hubby! That was quite an amazing discovery. He was always getting into fights back then, he quite enjoyed it. It’s a waste we didn’t meet back then when we were teenagers, we could have done some damage together and that could have been fun fun fun !!! Check out this cool tough girl’s song…
This song is by Three Days Grace. It’s quite a depressing song but the music is amazing so I choose to ignore the lyrics ;) I suggest you do the same!
This song is definitely talks about someone that wants to end his life. When I was a teenager, one of my best friends was trying to commit suicide. She swallowed a pack of pain killers. We all knew that she didn’t mean to harm herself and it was just a call for help. Eventually she was fine and nothing happened. She had a few issues though, smoked weed and other shit and she was drinking heavily; she also used to lie a lot about everything. We were very upset about it. Even though we felt so close to her, we didn’t know anything about her because she never told the truth and she always tried to hide things from us. A few years later when we were no longer friends with her we discovered that all these years she was living with an abusive dad. The entire family was affected by it. 5 years ago her younger sister committed suicide. It was quite a tragedy. I always felt so close to this girl and at the same time I knew nothing about her, it took me a few years to realize that everything that I thought I knew about her was completely false. I can’t even imagine what it’s like to live with abusive parents. If only she would have shared this information with her friends then we would have been able to help her. I’ve also felt really betrayed because I was very close to her and shared everything with her and all I got in return is a bunch of lies. Nothing in our friendship seemed real afterwards. It is quite scary. Today she is married for the second time and expecting her fourth child. I hope she is happy because I know deep inside she is a good person and she deserved a good life after what she’s been through. I forgave her a long time ago. Check out this amazing song about pretty depressing subject…
What’s this song about? This song's meaning was explained by Three Days Grace frontman, Adam Gontier, at a live performance on March 7, 2007 at the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C., where he stated, "this song is about being in a very dark place, but being able to see a way out." Then, at the Palace, in Detroit, Michigan, he explained it as, "feeling like you don't belong here, and wanting to give up, but never giving up." (Wikipedia – Never too late)
This song is by Deep Purple. My hubby showed me how to play it on his electric guitar. I remember when I was a teenager all my friends and everyone around me loved this song. Every time I met someone that could play the guitar, this would be the first song he would play. I’ve also added the awesome cover version by Metallica.
Speaking of fire, when I was about 8 years old, I had a friend that was in the same class with me. She had a one year older brother that was very disturbed. One time I came over to play in my friend’s house and her brother walked into her room and he was playing with matches. He showed us how he can put off a match with his hand. At some point he turned to me and said “let’s see if you can do that as well” of course I wasn’t brainless and I knew how dangerous it is so I’ve refused. Then he said “I bet it’s because you are scared, you’re a chicken, I want to see you do that”. He put a lot of pressure on me and I was quite scared of him so I said I’ll do it. I was holding the match and my hand was getting near the burning match and then her brother shoved my hand towards the match and I’ve burned my hand. I was in a severe pain and I’ve cried a lot. He gave me a cotton ball and he told me not to tell anyone about it otherwise he will beat me to death. I’ve never been so scared in my life. I went home and I was too scared to tell my mum about it because I was afraid he will beat me up. So I’ve hidden it from her for 3 days. On the third day my mum noticed that I was hiding me hand and asked me what are you holding in your hand and of course I said nothing , finally she made me open my hand and she saw the burn that I got in my hand. She was in a complete shock, she started asking me how did that happen and I broke down and told her the whole story. She rang his mum and told her the story as well. His parents beat him up for what he did. The following day I was scared to go to school in case he will see me and bash me up. He never got near me since that day. That was the end of my friendship with this girl; I wasn’t allowed to be friends with her anymore. A few years later I heard this guy was doing time for a rape he had committed. And that’s how this criminal started his career… Anyway, check out this smoking song…
What’s this song about? This song is about a fire in the Casino at Montreux, Switzerland. The band was going to record their Machine Head album there right after a Frank Zappa concert, but someone fired a flare gun at the ceiling during Zappa's show, which set the place on fire. The band was relocated to another hotel and recorded the album in the Rolling Stones mobile studio.
This song is by Republica. They had two really big hits back in 1996. I loved this song very much! I’ve listened to a few other songs and they are quite cool. I’m guessing this song is about bad relationship Again. I’ll tell you about the first boy in my life. All through elementary school I was hanging around with one sweet boy, he was my neighbor and in the same class with me. For 6 years we were constantly together. Everyone thought we are going to be end up together for the rest of our life. When I was 12 years old, my parents decided to move to a different town and that was the end of our friendship. Anyway, when I was about 10 he gave me a nice photo of him making a sweet boyish pose. In return I gave him a photo of me making a silly face with a puffy hair, I looked really spastic but it was the purpose of this photo because I thought it was funny and I wanted him to laugh. One day we had a huge fight and we stopped talking to each other. Because we were just kids and kids usually do horrible things to each other, he took the photo and he showed it to all kids in my neighborhood, everyone was making fun of my photo. I did look ridicules but I was trying to share something funny with my friend that was my way of sharing something with him. I think he expected a normal photo of just a sweet girl and he got this stupid photo. I found it very entertaining. Because everyone was making fun of me, I didn’t leave the house for a week; it was quite a trauma for me. Looking back I’m quite amazed by the fact that at such young age I had a sense of humor and none of the neighborhood kids could understand it. I’m quite amazed by the way I was looking at life and how I always wanted to laugh and have fun. Of course I did have my revenge a few years later, when I moved to my new town I got my new girlfriends to prank this boy all the time. It was funny! Eventually all my friends from the previous town used to hang out in the same alternative rock clubs I used to go to so I got to see this boy everywhere. It always made me think that even if my parents decided to stay in the previous town I would have ended up in the same place. It’s quite weird! Check out this cool song…
This next song is by Talking Heads. I love the original song and the cover that was released in 1999 by Tom Jones & The Cardigans is absolutely amazing!!! I’ve added the cover video as well.
I have quite a story about the cover song that happened at the same time it was released. My friend and I got completely addicted to it and we couldn’t stop listening to it together. We sang along as well every time it was on, it was quite a hit in the 80’s and it was back in fashion thanks to the amazing Tom Jones cover. We also developed all kind of hobbies at the time, every time something else. Since my friend is very creative we started making bead necklaces, we spent hours making at her house. One time we were sitting in her room listening to this song with a closed door and at some point after hours of making those necklaces I’ve asked my friend to get me something to drink, it was a really good timing because as soon as my friend opened the door she realized that her house was on fire. The house had 3 floors and we were on the second floor where the fire started. The fire was coming towards us, the whole third floor was completely burned and there was fire everywhere. We ran out of the house and of course invited the fire fighters to try and save whatever is left of the house. We were saved! It was one of the scariest ordeals that ever happened to me. We kept talking about how lucky we were that she came out of the room otherwise we would have been trapped. She was also able to alarm her brother that was on the third floor. We were completely in shock after this incident and the Irony of this happening at the same time that we were listening to this song was too much to handle. Ever since that day my friend couldn’t listen to this song anymore. She was completely traumatized by it. Half of the house was completely burned and the entire family stayed in a motel for a while.Anyway, it’s been 13 years since I’ve listened to this song. I hope my friend got over this trauma. Check out this cool song that had quite an impact on my life…
This song is by Evanescence. Their lead singer Amy Lee is amazing, she has such an amazing voice and she is very pretty as well. This song talks about an encounter she had with a man she didn’t know in a restaurant that asked her if she was happy, she thought he was a clairvoyant because at the time she was very miserable stuck in a bad relationship but she was trying to hide her feelings and she felt like this stranger can see right through her and read her thoughts. This story inspired her to write the lyrics.
Speaking of clairvoyant, one of my girlfriends always had some kind of special powers; at least that’s what we believed. I’ve already mentioned her in my previous posts when I was discussing the weegie board experience. I have another story that quite scared us all and I could never get it off my head. My friend and I were in the same class and the entire class went on a field trip. My friend was making a lot of noise in the back of the bus and the school’s bus driver got really irritated and asked her to keep quiet. Because she was very naughty she started swearing at the bus driver and it got to a point where both of them started swearing at each other, there was a lot of yelling going on between them and right at the end, before my friend got off the bus she turned to the bus driver and said the following words: “I hope you die, I hope you won’t wake up tomorrow morning…” You can probably guess what happened next, the following morning we heard that the bus driver had died in his sleep. This is a true story! It was a complete shock because the whole town was mourning his death since everybody knew him. My friend blamed herself, she was devastated. Later on we found out that he wasn’t a healthy man and he had a heart failure but the timing couldn’t be worst! A year after my friend was working in a fast food chain and the daughter of the bus driver also started to work there. My friend felt so bad, she couldn’t look her in the eye. Of course it was a coincidence but quite a spooky one .Amy Lee reminds me of her, they look similar. Anyway, check out this cool song…
What’s this song about? Lead vocalist, Amy Lee, has stated that the song has several meanings, the first being about an incident that took place at a restaurant. "I was inspired to write it when someone said something to me — I didn’t know him, and I thought he might be clairvoyant," says Lee from a tour stop in Tulsa to The Boston Phoenix. "I was in a relationship and I was completely unhappy. But I was hiding it. I was being completely abused and I was trying to cover it up; I wouldn’t even admit it to myself. So then I had spoken maybe 10 or 15 words to this guy, who was a friend of a friend. We were waiting for everyone else to show up, and we went into a restaurant and got a table. And he looked at me and said, ‘Are you happy?’ And I felt my heart leap, and I was like, he totally knows what I’m thinking. And I lied, I said I was fine. Anyway, he’s not really clairvoyant. But he is a sociology major." (Wikipedia – Bring me to life)
This song is by the legendry Chris Cornell. My wonderful hubby surprised me with a premium tickets to his concert on the 15th October in Brisbane. This is going to be the best concert ever, It’s an acoustic performance and we will be seating very close to the stage. I’m so excited!!! My hubby spoils me a lot and always surprises me , he is just amazing! My hubby is quite an eccentric man; he always surprises me and leaves me in a complete shock by his actions. He is definitely not the typical boring guy; he has done some crazy stuff during our 10 years together. One of the craziest things he did was during his first visit to Australia. He was sent by his company to visit the Australian branch and to see some local clients. Before his trip he asked me “what do you want me to get you from Australia” I’ve answered “ a Koala bear” because I love koala bears , It’s actually my favourite animal and of course I was joking and I really just meant a Koala stuffed doll. My hubby has decided to do everything that he can to get me my Koala. So guess what he did? He tattooed 2 beautiful Koala bears on his back. He tattooed a mother Koala carrying her cub on her back. Since we spoke a lot on the phone during his one month stay in Australia he told how he got me a koala bear and he is taking care of it. He really convinced me that he got a Koala bear. When he came home he held a video camera and recorded my reaction when he took off his shirt. I was in a complete shock! He tattooed a Koala bear especially for me , how crazy is that?!? As I’ve mentioned before, he is really not the boring type and he is very creative. I never have a dull moment with him around!!! This is not the only surprise he has done for me, the craziest thing he has successfully managed to execute is our surprise wedding. But that’s another story for a different post. Check out this amazing song about a woman that wants to change her man with no success. I definitely don’t want to change mine!
What’s this song about? Greg Tate of Rolling Stone said this about the song "Can't Change Me," is as rhapsodically gorgeous as pop gets, putting a spin on true love that any reprobate slacker can relate to: "She's going to change the world/But she can't change me/Suddenly I can see everything that's wrong with me/But what can I do?/I'm the only thing I really have at all." Cornell unveils a desire to be reckoned with as an openly wounded and unabashedly portentous rock balladeer (Wikipedia – You can’t change me).
This next song is by Iron Maiden. To be honest, this is the only album that I’ve purchased of Iron Maiden because I’m not a huge fan of Bruce Dickinson’s Voice. In fact he scares the shit out of me! But I do admit they have some really good songs. I do have quite a history with this band. First of all, when I started listening to heavy metal music, I’ve came across Iron Maiden and their amazing posters. I really wanted to cover my entire room with all of their scary creatures. My cousin was a huge fan of Iron Maiden, he had all their albums and his room was covered with Iron Maiden posters. I wanted to get my hands on his posters. At the same time he just got his driving licence and he wanted to buy a car. His dad told him that he needs to get a job. Because he was quite a lazy bugger he started selling all his belongings. My Dad wanted to help both of us and offered a lot of money to buy two Iron Maiden posters of him. That’s how I got my Iron Maiden posters. I’ve hanged them on my bedroom door which was the perfect location for it ;) I thought my Dad is so awesome for getting me those posters. It’s not every day that parents allow their kids to hang dead creatures on their walls!
Once I got the posters it motivated me to buy an album so I did get their newest album at that time which was this album. Back then I was investing all my money and energy in music and new albums. At the same time I had a friend which was a complete clueless and didn’t understand anything in music but always had to have everything you had (you probably know the kind I’m talking about!) anyway, every time I bought a new album she wanted to record it. When I got my Iron Maiden she wanted a copy of my new cassette. Another friend and I decided to teach her a lesson. We gave her a recorded cassette of Leonard Cohen that we found in my friend’s house and we told her that it’s Iron Maiden. Because she didn’t really listen to anything I’ve given her, she believed that it is Iron Maiden. We never told her the truth. It’s funny because after all these years I still wonder if whenever she hears “Hallelujah”on the radio she thinks she is listening to Iron Maiden… check out this holy smoke song…
What’s this song about? The song deals with the many Televangelist scandals that took place in the United States in the late 1980s, including mentions of "Jimmy the Reptile" (a reference to Jimmy Swaggart), "The TV Queen" (a possible reference to Tammy Faye Bakker), Noah, and "plenty of bad preachers for the Devil to stoke." Contrary to what some believe, however, this song is not aimed at the Christian religion itself, but rather the people that abuse it to make gains for themselves. This is one of the very few Iron Maiden songs with profanity in the lyrics (for example, "I've lived in filth/I've lived in sin/and I still smell cleaner than the shit you're in"), which is replaced by gunshot sounds in censored versions.(Wikipedia – Holy Smoke)
